Konstantin Makovsky, born in 1839, was a Russian painter. He was affiliated with the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers), a group of realist Russian painters who opposed the academic restrictions in art. He is most well known for his many historical paintings which depict an ideal life in Russia of centuries past.
Makovsky’s father was an amateur painter and art figure and his mother was a composer. This influence from his parent’s interests led to the artist showing an interest in music and art from a young age. At the age of 12, Makovsky enrolled in the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, where he was heavily influenced by his teachers.
Makovsky then went to France after graduating to study traditional folk and classical music of the area. His original intention was to become a composer, but in the end, he chose to pursue painting instead.
This decision took him to Saint Petersburg, where he enrolled in the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1858. Makovsky left the academy without a diploma because, along with thirteen other artists in the academy, he protested against a decision by the academy to only allow art of Scandinavian mythology in the contest for the Large Gold Medal of Academia.
Makovsky painted prolifically in the realism genre and was vocal about depicting life in old Russia in a more realistic manner. As a founding member of the Society For Traveling Art Exhibitions, he traveled to Serbia and North Africa in the 1870s. This had a huge stylistic influence on Makovsky’s work as he began to place more emphasis on shapes and colors.
Makovsky was awarded a Large Gold Medal at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889, a testament to the fact that he had become one of the most influential and highly paid Russian artists by the end of the 1800s. He died in a tram accident in 1915.
